My abstracts are about line and colour and how this relates to a situation arising in the present moment. The work begins from an overall feeling about a situational experience. Recognition of a situation, may come on quickly or slowly. With what ever speed it comes on, on the first inkling of it, preparations begin to commence with the painting. The situation is felt and this feeling gets conveyed through a brush dragged across the work surface, making an expressive line in the process.
At some point the brush stops to express through line, and colour is seen to begin to appear amongst the lines. The brush then becomes the tool to express the colour of the situation. The colour is mixed, and laid into the space where it shows itself to appear. This is how my abstract paintings take shape. I see both line and colour as the reflection of a situation being painted.

If for instance, and it happens often, while the colours show themselves and are then brought into manifestation, there may seem to be an imbalance or disharmony occurring in the painting. Then instead of correcting it through analysis of it or changing it through direct involvement, like feeling the disharmony and directly bringing it into balance, it is allowed to correct itself. And this can happen by allowing the imbalance to be there while working on the rest of the painting and sooner or later it appears to correct itself. This is what I often find intriguing with an abstract paining. How it corrects itself without direct intervention by the painter.

With the ceramics, my designs are original and I make very few repeats. I enjoy working the clay in simple forms. The whole process from a solid ball of clay to the fired piece is a delight. Some forms are pre-designed before execution, while others are spontaneously manifest.
