Artist Statement for Lou Spina

My professional life was spent as a commercial artist. At the beginning of my career I spent several years working as an art director for advertising agencies such as Ted Bates and J. Walter Thompson. During this time I won Awards of Distinctive Merit from the New York Art Directors Club and The New Jersey Art Directors Club plus two American Printers Association awards for excellence in art direction and creativity. In 1974 I opened my own design consulting company-creating advertising for many large corporations such as Citibank, Pfizer, Hoffman La-Roche, H. Stern etc.

At the School of Industrial Art (now known as The High School of Art & Design) I began my art training and went on to New York City University and The School of Visual Art where I studied commercial art. Several years after completing my formal education I studied at The Art Students League. Here I studied life drawing under Anthony Palumbo and oil painting with Robert Brackman. At the League I found I had a great love for fine art. Unfortunately the great demands of my design business took precedence over my love of painting. Upon semi-retirement from the commercial art world I began painting again.

My main subject matter has been the people who live and work in New York City and how they have continued their normal way of life after 9/11. For the most part my subjects are everyday people doing things that carry them through the day. I find this subject matter extremely interesting. It expresses one moment in someone’s life and sometimes can clearly define what that person is about.
