Artist Statement for Laura Diamondstone

My work is process-oriented, engrossed in development of stratum that succumb to distress from digging, scratching, melting, or sanding. The content cycles through decay, weathering, restoration, and renewal. I work physically, messily, in multiples, in formats that are very tiny to as large as my space allows. Under paintings are conditioned with textures of reclaimed materials found by happenstance or affinity – beeswax, bones, tree sap, tar, found objects, and gunk. I am conscious of the ecologic impact and personal/environmental hazards of my art making and attempt to compensate by inclusion of matter otherwise en route to landfill. The middle earth of the paintings contain true earth pigments, self-mixed for layered glazing to achieve color depth, patinas, and a history of my experience and responses to the process. The final composition attempts to emulate the stirring and astonishing imagery I find in nature and my urban environment.
