Artist Statement for Luana Kaufmann

Luana Kaufmann's collages are compilations of found images that she has cut out and glued together. She is drawn to images from the early 20th century and earlier, and is especially fond of combining components from different eras and cultures. Always accompanying this diversity is a unifying theme and a desire to create a new homogenous world, in which everybody looks completely at home and comfortable. She is now proud to offer fine quality giclee print reproductions of the original collages. Each print weds exquisite color and paper to become an archival delicacy, special in its own right.

"A couple of images gravitate to each other and suddenly state the impending theme. What was unknown and spontaneous metamorphoses into the known and deliberate. Allowing the components to have that initial free rein offers a mystery, a conceptual palette of infinite range, and access to the grand land of the psyche. And then I do enjoy a little tyranny with my commands of placement. I guess it's a waltz of chaos and order. Or preferably, a samba.

I am very excited to be offering my designs as giclee prints for both pragmatic and conceptual reasons: the color and detail is exquisite, and the archivability is now significant; and my concept of collage, the fusion of images to create a new and congruent universe, is now taken to a higher level."
