Artist Statement for Lucy O'Donovan

The idea of writing a statement for this site scares me, as although I'm fairly comfortable with what my work's about, the process of writing it down runs the risk of sounding rather pretentious. But I'll give it a go.

My painting is driven, perhaps obsessionally, by my fascination with the human body and the feelings that this invokes. For me it is really important to portray the body in as honest a way as I can, irrespective of whether it would be considered classically beautiful or not. I'm aware that the force behind this is probably a kick back against the social pressures of achieving the perfect figure.

The shape and colour of flesh is something that I'm constantly trying to attain. It usually feels like a battle of colours and textures, the balance of which I feel I never achieve. I think this is why my canvasses have a tendency to vary so much - I'm always experimenting with how to portray flesh in a way that works for me.

I tend to paint people involved in my life, as emotional attachment seems to strongly influence the way I work. I suppose it's a fairly self-obsessed process: I often paint in order to work through my own issues and issues relating to the subject. Although I have no idea whether the emotion involved adds to the painting or detracts from it.
