Artist Statement:
IAIN MACHELL
Each image on this website is accompanied by a statement which outlines themes ranging from personal and universal contemporary anxiety to the investigation of cultural and historical memory. 3-D objects and 2-D images combine or stand alone in the space frame of a solitary drawing surface or an empty room.
This work has evolved from figurative and organic abstract sculpture into site-specific sculptural installations; from solitary formal objects to sensory environments mixing sculptural objects with time-based media such as audio and video. Fragile materials such as paper, video & audio tape are used as surfaces, and to construct spaces that contain memory as well as describe sculptural form.
Now the circle has started over with objects and images, mostly figurative, occupying the white empty space of the paper drawing surface.
The human figure is always involved, either literally, metaphorically, conceptually, or through surrogate objects such as furniture and clothing.
