Artist Statement for Mae Jeon

I have created a series of digital art works using flowers as starting concepts beginning in 2000. I am constantly intrigued by the frailty and beauty of flowers. I see them as objects that represent my emotions. Each piece is an expression of a personal experience and the resulting series becomes a public garden of my private emotions.

I was raised in a culture in which emotional restraint was praised as a virtue. I was known as being a calm and gentle girl and the trusted eldest daughter of my family. I had always repressed my emotions and was always very soft spoken. Though this was a admirable trait, the result was a lack of communication skills. I found that talking to other people was very difficult and often felt as though I was in a shell or enclosed by unseen walls. Deep inside I have a desire to break out of this shell and effectively express myself. In 1971 for my solo exhibition in Japan, I created a series of paintings using a butterfly theme. I felt that the butterfly and I had much in common as they achieved a new beautiful appearance and freedom through their emergence from the cocoon. After my second solo exhibition in Seoul, Korea, I began to work as a graphic designer and creating fine art remained a hobby.

In 1991, while working for a company in New York, I was introduced to computer graphics. I was awed and excited by this mediums endless possibilities. As I gained skill in using the computer, I felt that I wanted to incorporate it into my pursuit of fine art. Through the digital medium, I had found the new language in which I could express my feelings. The process creating my art begins by collecting images of flowers using 35mm photographs. I then scan them into digital form and repaint, distort, and recreate the image using various software. Flowers in my art represent my spiritual and emotional experiences. I use them to comment on the emotional conflicts and experiences which I encounter in every day situations.
