There is a strong, playful streak in Mago’s mixed-media paintings. A swaying lobster, a bird’s eye view of traffic, a seal tossing off colorful clothingŻthese are carefree images made by a thoughtful artist who enjoys a sense of humor. Mago is Ely Magos. He’s a clever Austrian artist with a commanding variety of styles and interests.
Vivid yellow pigment makes a buoyant background for the funny picture Atlantis Undressed Seadog which can be read as a trained seal shedding speckled apparel in several directions. (The word seal in German is seehund, which can be translated into English, literally, as seadog.)

Preliminary Questions related to Catalogue:from Eleonor Kennely Washington Post
® What title do you want to use for the exhibit? The title will be used on
the cover of the catalogue. I asked Mr. Gaetan and he told me to ask you
directly. He also asked me to give you the following information and ask you’re : well the title for the exhibition should be “Reflections”
opinion:
® Mr. Gaetan and the designer want to use “Atlantis Undressed Seadog” on
the :Cover Idea is great
cover with a red background and your name in white. They also want to make
your middle name, MAGO, more bold then your first and last name since you use
Mago as a signature. I think this will be a dramatic presentation. What do
you think? That sounds nice , I agree with it.
® The designers also intend to include a black and white photo of you, with a
short biographical paragraph. The gallery has asked me to write this short
biographical statement based on material you sent to Mr. Gaetan. I will share
the statement with you as well.Thank you
The following is the order of images inside catalogue: Aleph Yellow, Aleph
Blue, Aleph Red, Aleph White,New York City Traffic, Atlantis Lobster, Roses with Black,
Jumping Whale, Forms and Colors. How is that order? I would like to have 10 pictures in the Catalogue. The Alephs are together 4 ,it is a Serie of Alephs.
Questions Regarding Mr. Niederhammer’s art work:
® Tell me about the signs in the Aleph series. What do the symbols signify? I
know from your artist’s statement that the history of signs is very
significant to your art. Please tell me a bit more about the Aleph symbols in
the context of your larger interest in signs.I had the chance to live in Israel for nearly 3 Years ( 1978-1981) In that Time I learned Hebrew and I learnd to understand a lot of the Jewesh, Christians and Moslems History in that Region ...The Hebrew Signs are mystereous and mystical signs , I was looking to the connections between Signs (hebrew Signs and other Signs , such as Sumeric or samaritanic signs , also the question how those Signs where developed whas an very interesting question to me .. So I was traveling a lot , walking a lot , I went to the Desserts the Negev and the Sinai ( Mount Sinai Climing ) and belive me It is very hard to explain all those impressions .., it is one reason why I Paint and why I have no words for all that ….The Aleph sign is a very old Hebrew Sign , It is the second Sign in the Hebrew Word ELOHIM =(God)and it means the 12 Signs are the AbrahamsClans of the historical phylogeny.( 4 times 3 Signs = 12 !! )
® Similarly, what does the rose signify to you in “Roses with Black”?
It is the Answer to Love and dead ( the Rose is a Symbol for strongnes and a Symbol for independence …the color behind is white ( white is no Color it is Light) also as Black ( Black is no Color Black is also Light)After something ends, dies , something new will start to grow…so it’s a cycle
® The color and compositional structure of the paintings in “New York City
Traffic” and “Forms and Colors” as well as “Atlantis Undressed Seadog”
are
terrific. Some of your paintings demonstrate attention to depth of field and
three-dimensionality. Other paintings, such as the Aleph series, are less
concerned with the manipulation of space in the painting plane. What does it
mean to you, to be an artist whose work has such different appearances?
It means that I am independent and free with the paintings I am doing
And I work on it every day …
® Three of the paintings in the catalogue refer to animals: “Jumping
Whale”,
“Atlantis Lobster” and ”Atlantis undressed Seadog.” Is this a
coincidence? No.. they are animals creatures in our world , we should give them respect and space …because those animals make as reach , they give as more than we are able to say…
Or, do you use animals in your work for a reason? Yes see above ..
® The title of “Atlantis undressed Seadog” is so funny, I have to ask you
about it: What does it mean??!! Have you seen people dressing there dogs and Cats ? Yes ? Well the nature does not need those Armanis and Catwalks..
The nature give you only made by the evolution colors and multifarios creatures , we should respect them as they are …
® Do you paint every day? Do you paint the same place every day? O h Yes
I paint every Day , maybe not large Pictures but I paint in the studio ..
® Tell me something about your exhibits in 2002, at the Art-Fair Salzburg and
Raiffeisen Galerie. How did people respond to your work? What do you want
viewers to experience when they view your art?Well , people forgot to look , to see , to hear, they are full with other things ( TV PC,DVD,Videos,Politics etc..), so they reflect to the work I am doing with very different meanings and opinions, but most of them
have a strong feeling to the colors and to the forms I am creating ..
® What is your earliest memory of making art?when I was a child with 3 years , I started and it became more and more …
® Is art less relevant in a world increasingly dominated by digital
experience? No , not at all. The digital World the world Of Microsoft and the world of Numbers ( zeros and ones (0 +1 ) ) it is a different world,
very speedy, very fast, and with very short livetimes ( the technical development goes for many reasons , very fast) , so the artists, painters , writers , and nearly everybody suffers also somehow on that…
( without Love is everthing nothing )
® If you can generalize, and based on your experience working in Ithaca, New
York 15 years ago, what is a difference between being an artist in Western
Europe and in the United States? Artists , Painters in Europe have a very strong feelings to the US,you have many excellent Painters, Jasper Jones
Wharhol,Rosenberg, and many others made a new generation of art ..
But they where strong influenced by the history of the old World, Europe.
The traditional Art comes from there, and the contemporary Art started in the US (with European Artists ,Duchamp for exemple ) and developed untill
Now the Art World , and I hope it will stay like this with freedom and peace and love to all …
Thank you Ms.Eleanor Kennelly
With
Best regards
Andreas Mago Niederhammer
