Artist Statement:
"The Travelling Dress" by artist Maimuna Adam is a body of photographic and video artworks. The artist explores aspects of displacement in relation to stereotypes of nationality and 'origins', as well as how travel and relocation affect the individual.
The artworks focus on a displaced object, a dress which the artist once owned. By exploring the remembered object of her past, the artist comments on issues of attachment to the physical, as well as that which is personally perceived and felt.
In approaching contemporary issues of 'transnationalism', the constant movement and cross-over of people and objects within a global world, artist Maimuna Adam reveals the very relevant complexities which may be created within the identity of displaced individuals. The artist delves into the notion of identity as fluid, at a time where notions of boundaries and limitations fluctuate.
This body of work considers both the physical as well as the psychological interactions people have with objects and their physical surroundings. This in turn is linked by the artist with the exploration of home and belonging, notions which the artist sees as mediated through the object.
