Artist Statement:
Studying Shamanism and mythology has deepened my understanding of life and what is sacred to many cultures around the world. Shaman interpret dreams by analyzing the symbolic messages they are given. My compositions are based on these symbolic messages.
My techniques had their roots in traditional watercolor painting and evolved into mixed media. I paint with pastels and acrylic paint laying on thick bright contrasting colors sealing each layer with varnish. Black marking pens define the shapes. Beads enhance the shapes. My goal is to create as much varying textural design as possible.
Major influences on my art are the clear colors and black outlining of Tiffany’s stain glass.

| Your Personal Biography |
Mairyann started her art career over 30 years ago as an Art/Interior Design major at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. She took every art course offered and minored in Art Education.
After graduating from college she became an instructor of Interior Design at Eastern Iowa Community College. While there she taught classes in color theory, design concept, drawing, and art history. On weekends she held a children’s class on sculpture at the local art museum. She was an instructor for six years.
Over the next ten years she experimented with many different mediums. She did drawings in silver and copper point, painted in oil, gouache, alkyd, tempera, and acrylic and then went on to watercolor. She attended five workshops with well-known watercolor artists such as Tom Lynch and Tony Couch. This was her realist phase where she did a number of huge tortoises and some botanical paintings.
Mairyann spent 12 years living in Southern Florida and was very much influenced by the bright colors, shells, and circus atmosphere around Sarasota. She was in numerous shows and won an award for best in show from ARTarget in Sarasota.
Due to space constraints she started to work on smaller wall hung pieces using the same techniques learned earlier in creating textures and the experimentation with other mediums. Using various techniques she now combines several painting media plus glass beads.
Studying Shamanism and mythology helped deepen my understanding of life and what is sacred to many cultures around the world. Symbols are the language used to give clues to hidden meanings from Shamanic journeys or dreams. I bind these symbols into the composition and they become texture for the structures in the painting.
Mairyann is represented by several galleries and gift shops in Athens, OH. She won Best of Show in Zanesville OH Women of Appalachia show ‘06, Ohio Art League and has a piece of art in the permanent collection of Kennedy Museum of Art, Athens, OH. She is currently living in Athens, OH. Her artwork can be seen on the Web at mairyannsart.com
