Artist Statement for Malik Alexander
|
|
|
Malik Ameer Alexander, a self-taught artist, was born in Washington DC in 1972. He was very creative from an early age, with an interest in abstract figures. During high school he became interested in computers and began experimenting with computers graphic and design. After a few years of college he moved to Chicago, where he developed an interest in oil painting and began turning his early sketches into paintings incorporating his studies into larger scale abstract paintings. Since moving to New York City, he's continued his work in abstract painting, while also producing graphic art and animation for the Internet. His work is inspired by both Jazz and Hip Hop culture, and also from the cities and the environments he has lived in. He currently lives in New Jersey with his wife and their son.
"My art is an interpretation of life as I See it. All of my of my work is part of me in some way or another. Welcome to my world. This is how I see everyday life, how I see struggle, how I see Love. This is who I am: A Man, Black, An Artist. Of these three I had no choice-They chose me. It is my task as a Black Man, as an Artist, to express to you the world as I see it, and to use my art to find the buauty in Life and the things around us. I do all of this so just maybe you can make it one more day and to tell you to not give up and to let you know that you are not alone in this sturggle."
