Artist Statement for Ofelia Uz

Being a self-taught artist my artworks are not constrained to a single category. My artwork includes: abstract, contemporary, sea/landscape, figure, still life and pencil drawings. In the past I have produced exquisite works including commissioned mosaic tiling, wood-burning designs, and murals. I often do volunteer work and paint murals for children's hospitals and other organizations.
I sold my first painting at 15 years old, to a good friend of the family who was captivated by one of my abstract paintings; at that moment was the start of the "word-of-mouth" exposure that helped me gain recognition and appreciation as a true artist. My paintings have been sold to private collectors and at major art festivals around the country. My work can be found all over the United States, Latin America, Canada and throughout Europe.
Being a caregiver to my husband, raising a family and everyday work for such a busy person like me and painting which is a huge part of my life have been difficult. Now that its us alone and over 35 years later, I'm having my first showing at a gallery. "Dreams come true, if you want them deep enough in your heart"
1962 to 1965 Taught myself how to paint, experiment with colors and
my own techniques that I still use up to this date.
1965 Sold my first abstract painting. (15 years old).
1966 to 1985 Sold my paintings through the "word-of-mouth" exposure.
(private art collectors).
1985 to 1998 Sold my paintings through the "word-of-mouth" exposure
and art festivals whenever I was available to do it.
1998 Became a full time artist, when I retired from
Honeywell.
1999 to 2004 Continue my ongoing journey as an artist.
2005 www.mangosgallery.com was born.
2006 A Singular Creation Online Gallery...
I won a year long website. (click on art & exhibition).
2007 Have kept myself very busy painting...showing my artwork
at "The Lodge" in San Antonio, Texas.
2008 Contribute to another long time dreams, by doing a
silent auction on 5 pieces I did specially for her.
At Aztlan Cultural Center, San Antonio, Texas.
