Artist Statement for Marco Licata

I was born in Hanau (D) on October 6th 1974. Not far away
from there, in Gelnhausen, I got sense of myself
thanks to a little rounded mirror with a green wooden
frame. At the age of 10 life shocked me
when I moved to Italy, in a little town
close to Bergamo, with all my family. I lived my youth,
even though I didn't spend much time
at home. During one of my trips,
in Amsterdam, I got shocked for the second time,
when I visited Salvador Dalí's exhibition. I found out that
I had a passion for art, especially for surrealism.
Time goes by and I kept looking for my own form of
expression. I made a try with music, but I poorly failed,
since I don't have any talent at it at all.
I got shocked again when, thanks to the movie
"Alien", I got in touch with HR Giger's Art.
I found out I had a taste for gothic and I realized that painting
is my form of expression. In 2000 I got a degree
in industrial design at Milan's Politecnico University. One month
later, with a suitcase, a big feel of
painting and most of all of changing things, I went
to Dublin. A wonderful experience where I partied a lot,
but painted very little. At the end of 2001, with the feeling of getting
my head straight, I moved to Berlin. I worked
in a graphic studio and I became a part of the
"Airbrush Club Berlin". There I met many important people
and I learnt a lot of theory and techniques,
not only for airbrush (in fact I use
a mixed technique with pastel, watercolor
and acrylic). At the end of 2003 I moved back to Italy.
In 2006 I lived for 6 month in Glasgow, but always with
one constant in my life: painting.
about Marco´s art:
Often light is hidden behind the curtain of darkness.
