Artist Statement for Maria Parmo

My works are based on dialectic between the conscious elements (straight lines, designed forms) and unconscious ones (textures),
in to balance them.
It express my desire to solve the dichotomies in dialectic form and not in fight.
Should the viewer experience these concept when they see my painting?. No, they shouldn’t.
The viewer could have a dialectic relation with the art work where they is free "to think" or "to feel" what wants about it.(Maria Parmo 2007)

"Subject matter in painting is merely the trigger that allows the expression of something more profound, unconscious and possibly hidden even from oneself, and therefore perhaps so all inclusive, so viscerally immanent to humankind." (R.Alonso)

My painting is a construction that becomes from two previous constructive processes:
-The first process is based on the search of two pictoric forms chosen from remains of paintings that arranged arbitrarily over card-board give as a result a collage.
-The second process is to convert the collage in drawing taking out color and texture preserving only the lines.
Combining the drawings between themselves new forms are generated (this time graphics), as well as the lineal structure that contains them.
-The last phase consists in passing the drawing to the canvas, strictly respecting the order and location acquired by each element (graphic form, line, and space) and from here to finish the construction with color and texture.
Thus, the painting results in: a construction starting from other constructions.
It is a circular form of working where in each phase something is modified and generated.
A circle that is self fed with the collage of the painting remains, the drawing of the collage synthesis, and the painting of both.

“The construction, on a purely spiritual base, requires a long work that starts almost blindly and in a growing manner.”
…The work of art born mysteriously.
…The forms arranged “arbitrarily” have in their background a deep and precise relation between them. (V.Kandinsky)

“To chose and to arrange the forms arbitrarily” till, at last, the total composition is determined in a way in which everything fitted(…up to a point where better not to move anymore is), it is to look and to search a deep and precise relation that the forms have when they interact between them in a whole composition.
And this is something that captivate to the one that it does, by mysterious and revealing simultaneously, although
one does not know which is the mystery, or which is the revelation.
María Parmo(2004)

My abstract imagery emerges and evolves from the interplay of specific pictorial elements (form, colour, texture, etc.); it can be said this is my subject matter. But the actual placement and repetition of the signs over the surface of the canvas with no
pre-eminence or meaning other than that of being there, or not, is one of the main analogies between my paintings and existence.
Like us,these images are either present or absent: here today, gone tomorrow... an equal destiny does not admit hierarchies."
María Parmo (1999)
