Artist Statement:
A Zen proverb: “When the student is ready, the teacher will come.” I returned to art class several years ago after a long hiatus during which I was busy with family and work. Studying with Judy Schaefer, an accomplished artist, has been my good fortune. In addition, I studied with the late Carol Stronghilos and with Jennifer Mazza and Amy Robinson at the Art Center at Old Church in Demarest, NJ.
Since then, exploring the possibilities of a “visual dance in space” is my ongoing pursuit. Using acrylic paint and a variety of other media in these explorations, I strive to create art that evokes movement, vitality, and enthusiasm.
My dance in space is a holistic endeavor. For example, years ago when I was in college, I participated in a Master Class with modern dance choreographer, Alwin Nicolais. After some warm-ups, Nicolais asked us to explore an interesting position using the “personal space” where we were standing. I quickly dropped to the floor, twisted into a pretzel-like pose and was surprised when he directed the group’s attention to me. He asked me, “given the position you are in, how would you now move?”
