Artist Statement for Mark Haberstroh

|
When trying to create an image I try to find everything I need through the color. "Color" includes black and white, as in my drawings. The color supplies the light, forms and shapes, composition, perspective, and the idea, if there is one. All of these are discovered, extracted, revealed, excavated or given somehow through the color.
My process is improvisational, therefore trusting my own impulses is paramount. Every stroke stays. It may be overlayed later with another stroke which also stays, changing the first. There are no mistakes, only signs along the way. My hope is that people can find something refreshing and different in my paintings and drawings.
My art education consists of having studied in Switzerland in the '70s under B. Assenza.
