Artist Statement:
The purpose of my artwork is to provoke a perceptual, internal, and intellectual response for the viewer, a visual that speaks to life's experiences. To create symbols of universal connection and the relationship that one has to another and to nature.
Furthermore, art conveys my nonverbal view of life. An ongoing portrayal of myself, my behavior, adventure, exploration, risk taking, and my non-acceptance of convention and the status quo. I am continually in search of the new, the different, and I am fascinated with the unconventional. Life has a hard, aggressive side, as does much of my work, represented by rigid, angular lines. However, the soft side is also apparent, visible as curves and soft forms.
I used the invaluable experience of the mentorship of Bill Prokopiof and Doug Hyde, along with my own vision, to create an evolving body of work in alabaster, marble, limestone, and bronze, often combining different elements to bring forth a duality in the sculpture that I make. My work is included in private and public collections
internationally....

Santa Fe, NM – International Sculpture Objects & Functional Art Fairs in Chicago and New York have predominated in the art world as an important market barometer, of sorts. This year SOFA Founder/Director Mark Lyman has opened SOFA in Santa Fe, SOFA West. SOFA West opens June 11-14 at the Santa Fe Convention Center with an excellent line-up of 35 international dealers.
Among the prominent dealers is Thomas R. Riley Galleries (www.rileygalleries.com ) of Columbus, Ohio. Thomas Riley, Founder, will display several pieces from renowned sculptor Mark Yale Harris. Specializing in the finest museum-quality forms with an emphasis on three-dimensional glass, wood, metal and ceramic sculpture, Thomas R. Riley Galleries has selected top contemporary artists for SOFA West.
Mark Yale Harris, also represented at The Edge Gallery of Santa Fe, is deeply entrenched in the west, noted as a pioneer of the 21st Century Regionalist style, writes curator James Burns. Harris’s work can be found throughout New Mexico: at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort Spa (located just off Santa Fe’s plaza), in the public collection of the state of New Mexico, as well as along historic Canyon Road. In the tradition of sculptors Constantin Brâncu&<351;i and Henry Moore, Harris’s work adopts a similarly clean line with smooth surface texture and emphasis placed on the material. However, as a lifelong resident of Santa Fe, NM; Aspen, CO; and Austin, TX, Harris’s inspiration comes from the west. Thus, Harris combines a modernist aesthetic with the legendary influence of the southwest.
“I’m excited to be included in the inaugural SOFA West exhibit; I look forward to seeing new work at the fair,” says Harris. “For me,” he continues, “SOFA Santa Fe is a homecoming; Santa Fe has always inspired my artwork.”
Exposition hours are Thursday - Sunday, June 11 – 14th: noon – 6 pm. Tickets are $15 for a single day of general admission and $25 for a four-day pass. Catalogs may be purchased at the Fair, or online for $20 (includes shipping) after the show at www.sofaexpostore.com. For general information, visit www.sofaexpo.com; call 800-563-SOFA (7632) or 773-506-8860; or email info@sofaexpo.com. The opening night preview will benefit the New Mexico Museum of Art Design Collection.
Mark Yale Harris’s work can be found at The Edge Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the Peace Arch State Park Sculpture Garden in Washington state; Artparks International Sculpture garden in England; the public art collection of the state of Virginia; as well as numerous public and private collections throughout the world.
