Artist Statement for Martha Bryce

Originally from Amelia Island, Florida, I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Masters Degree in Education. While living in the Caribbean in St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands I became captivated by the lush landscapes and dramatic color changes. The beauty of the islands became the inspiration for my paintings.

Influenced by the colors of nature, I use vivid colors and expressive brushwork, combined with the play of light and shadows, to create the mood and drama in my paintings. My paintings are primarily in oils and my subjects include still life, architecture, landscapes and seascapes as well as some abstracts. I have taken various classes and workshops to enhance my paintings with different styles.

For ideas I travel to St. Thomas and St. Kitts in the Caribbean, and to Charleston, South Carolina. My primary residence is in Ajijic, Mexico where opportunites abound for new and different paintings. I am an exhibiting member of the Ajijic Society of Arts and the Charleston Artist Guild.
