Artist Statement:
My current work is heavily layered and textured and invites the viewer to engage with it for its tactile as well as its visual qualities. Each piece is built up and torn down by the application of many layers of paint, gels, and textural and collage elements, then scraped, sanded, and scrubbed, then built up again, until a surface is arrived at that pleases me. It is at that precise point that I may decide to destroy the pleasing surface and begin again. I don’t want it to be too beautiful. I want to take it dangerously beyond repair, work again toward perfection, and then stop just in time....

"Color Rhythms" at Ozmosis Gallery
First impressions are crucial, and Bethesda, Maryland's, new Ozmosis Gallery aims to impress with its grand opening show, "Color Rhythms,” on Friday, May 14th. Shimmers of vibrant color energize the gallery space and viewer with an exhibition of large abstract paintings by Martha Brooks Marshall of Valrico, Florida. Marshall's canvases are best experienced rather than analyzed, with an openness to whatever emotion may be evoked by the interplay of colors and dancing strokes across their surfaces. With a professed loyalty to the tradition of color field painting, Marshall takes it to the instinctual level by building layer upon layer and balancing the painterly with the gestured. This gives her canvases the look of ancient cave paintings that glow with color. Her mystic and ethereal canvases have delighted collectors throughout the United States and abroad.
Donna Robusto, May, 2004
"Marshall’s lyrical canvases, composed of multiple layers of gestural brushmarks, shimmer with energy, color, and depth. Complements are frequently found strategically juxtaposed so as to activate fields of color that from a distance are calm and meditative. A closer look draws the viewer into a light-filled and atmospheric world, alive with misty veils of light.
Marshall’s strongest influences are Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann, and Helen Frankenthaler. She prefers to work in acrylics on stretched canvas, building layer upon layer of color, using a variety of brushes and other paint application and mark-making tools, allowing underlying colors to show through, deepening and enriching the overall surface.
Her work can be found in public, corporate and private collections throughout the United States. One of her paintings was chosen for a scene in the motion picture “The Punisher” with John Travolta."
Ren Wicks, VisionArt, 2005
“You are an ‘artist's artist’. Since I am a painter at heart, I look at your work and see that you say everything with color. When I was looking at all your paintings, I was in awe at the seeming simplicity of the composition, but the richness of your color statements is powerful!!”
Sheree Rensel, Artist
“A kindred spirit and one of Florida's premiere abstract artists. Martha's paintings capture that place in our imagination where anything is possible. She is the first abstract artist whose work so captivated me, I licensed the use of one for a business brochure. She's an awesome painter!“
Dusti Scovel – Art Consultant and Author
“While Martha’s ‘Hot Flash’ bounces off your eyeballs, she also gives you ‘Cooling Down’ time in luscious limes and aquas.”
Cheryl Kuck, The Tampa Tribune, April 10, 2002
“Marshall paints secrets and mysteries that are accessible from her dreams and pieces this unseen world onto paper and canvas. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Tampa Bay area and this is her first Sarasota exhibit.”
The Pelican Press, Bradenton, Florida, May 11, 2000
