Artist Statement for Andrea Barram

I have always been interesting in painting, drawing and anything else that I could use to express myself. I have painted on and off since I was a little girl but never really thought of it as anything other than doodling. About 2 years ago, I really started to feel an intense need to create. I started with an interest in abstract painting. I really like how mixing different colors, shapes, lines, and textures can create an impression of feeling and emotion.
Then I re-discovered oil pastels. I can remember painting with them when I was six years old in elementary school. I love the way the pastels slide over the paper or canvas and I love being able to smear and blend them with my fingers. There is something wonderfully freeing about looking down at my hands after I am done with a painting and seeing the different colors smudged on my fingers (and if I get a little too carried away, other places).
I view the art that I create now as an outlet for my inner child. It comes from that place inside of me that enjoys the way mud squishes between my toes, or that part of me that loves the way caterpillars' feet stick to your skin when you pick them up. It comes from a place inside of me that is new, innocent, excited and inquisitive about the world around me. When I paint I feel like a small child again sitting in the art room at school, totally absorbed in the moment. Lost in that place of magic and absolute delight.
Seeing my art on my wall now, reminds me that there is a vulnerable little Andrea inside of me that needs the same compassion and consideration that I offer to others. I hope that seeing my art will allow others to be more gentle with themselves and maybe even awaken the child within.
