Artist Statement for Ian Mclean

Images of domestic comfort in my oil paintings are intended to lure the viewer into familiar environments either real or imagined. I am particularly inspired by discrepancies between mood and setting and the use of decoration as distraction.
The tension that develops in these environments is often between aspiration and reality. This derives, in part, from a twentieth century emphasis on consumerism, an emphasis which seduces by allying products with emotional correlatives such as love, popularity, normalcy, happiness, tranquility, etc.
The inference which issues from the tension between beauty and unrest in my work is that these universal attempts to “feel good” by investing objects with emotion are ultimately disappointing. Ornamentation is a quick fix which proves inadequate to meet deep needs for contentment.
Finally, though, it is awareness of both our desire for comfort and beauty and our acknowledgement of the inadequacy of achieving these goals on a purely material plane that chart the way out.
