Looking at 19th and early 20th century photographs of stage actresses I was struck by intensity of the poses, the dramatic lighting, and the beautiful use of costume. I started doing a series of portraits inspired by these black and white images, but adding decorative and fantasy elements, and trying to achieve very lush and romantic colors using layer upon layer of Prismacolor pencil....
