Artist Statement for Michael Griesgraber
M Griesgraber resides in Las Vegas where he paints full-time.
Mike moved to Las Vegas from Los Angles in 2002 to pursue painting full time. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, he spent his formative years in the Twin Cities. At the University of Minnesota he studied art under Cameron Booth, Peter Busa, and for a short while in the early 70’s with Willem De Kooning. He earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in painting in 1974.
After graduating from the U of M he went to study under Herb Lubalin, Lou Dorfsman, and Mark English among others, at New York’s Syracuse University, earning a Master of Fine Arts in design in 1977. He is a past president of the Minnesota Chapter of Artist’s Equity, and was the assistant to Peter Seitz, design curator of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis for three years. After working in advertising for the past twenty plus years, much of it in the Los Angeles area, Mike now devotes himself to painting full time. Mike works in a variety of styles, sizes and formats primarily in acrylic and oil media. His use of vibrant colors and rich surface textures are his most prominent trademarks. He was one of 40 artists selected to exhibit in the Las Vegas Aerial Gallery 2003, and he and his studio appeared in the July/ August issue of Las Vegas Magazine. He sells his paintings from his studio in The Arts Factory, and through two local Las Vegas galleries.
His work is in a number of private collections in the U.S. and Canada and his paintings have been subject to several one man shows and included in many group exhibitions. He has won awards for his work beginning with a first place in Drawing, 1965 Minnesota Fine Arts Department Annual Exhibition. All his recent works can be seen on his web site: www.mgriesgraber.com
