Artist Statement for Michael Hansen

I've drawn pictures as long as I can remember. I did not take any art courses until Junior College, and then (while at Fullerton City College in Fullerton, California), I begain to take drawing classes. (figure drawing and expressive drawing were my favorites). I also took the usual academic art courses. My focus has always been figure drawing and painting.

On the basis of my portfolio, I was accepted at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Art Center was primarily a design school. At the time, the only major that allowed me to study figure drawing and painting (within their initial Fine Art Department) was FASHION ILLUSTRATION. I was fortunate to study classical figure drawing under a contemporary master of classical drawing - (Harry Carmean).

I have shown work in California and in Colorado. I have sold work which was hosted on the Internet in Germany and in France. I have work in private collections in the USA and in the UK.

I feel draftmanship (drawing and sketching) is an important foundation that has allowed me to explore a wide range of personal themes. I classify my work as "expressive figure painting and drawing", and I lean toward imagery with varying degrees of EROTIC/SENSUAL content. I feel subject matter determines my approach to any given work. I draw daily for the sheer enjoyment of this process.

I often use my own photographs (models) as the basis for my figure drawing and painting compositions.

Although I take my work seriously, I think it is important (for the viewer!) to maintain a sense of humor when viewing *some* of my work. I respond emotionally to every subject I paint. I use humor to defuse subject matter that is often VERY emotionally charged for me. Although I would call myself an optimist, I feel there exists an underlying tradgic sense about human life and existence. Francis Bacon seems to have captured this sense quite well in so many of his paintings. I think William de Kooning had a good understanding of the "feminine". My interpretations have to result from my own personal experience...and my own impressions and sensitivites regarding life.

I have been greatly influenced by the work of Francis Bacon, Eric Fischl, William de Kooning....and many of the European Masters.

I enjoy my time in the studio and I particularly enjoy working with models for drawing and painting projects.

I also enjoy photography and I continue to find it quite useful.
