Artist Statement for Michel Doret

Browsing through the presentation, you will discover that some of my paintings illustrate Primitive Surrealism of Total Art while others belong to the mega-movement. "They show the influence of Surrealism, pure and abstract; Expressionism, german and contemporary; Cubism and authentic primitive artefacts. Some compositions are hard-edge and geometric while others are organic and representational." Things are seen in a dematerialized way, through " a primary vision, a form of pure perception free from theoretical and practical concern, allowing one to experience the immediate expressiveness of things". These preceding words from Dr. Colin Rhodes Primitivism and Modern Art seem to apply to several of my works
According to that specialist: "The question remains as to whether there is a place for primitivist tendencies in the art of the post-colonial West. "Our answer lies in the very question: "Does not Primitive Surrealism of Total Art seem to bridge the gap and allow "to negotiate sensitively the complex relationship between the diverse material culture of the contemporary world?"
Dr. Michel Doret's statement on PRIMITIVE SURREALISM of TOTAL ART
[ also called for abbreviating by some: either TOTAL ART or PRIMITIVE SURREALISM ]
Primitive Surrealism of Total Art encompasses conscious and measured efforts of the conceptual artist towards an ideal communion of function and esthetics.
The esthetic notions in visual arts not only adopt all the techniques of conventional art but also try to transcend them; as for function, a symbolic essence will transform the works into visual poetry, that is life and beauty.
Primitive Surrealism of Total Art creates altogether "beautiful and useful works", borrowing from all domains to construct and build rather than to destroy. The artist calls on all existing techniques which will permit him to express to his own satisfaction his intimate conceptual representation.
The essence of Primitive Surrealism of Total Art is to communicate its message "the best way", that is, the way which is more convenient, more adequate according to artistic perception.
In conclusion, Primitive Surrealism of Total Art intends to be original, a sum of the themes, techniques, colors, forms, esssences, textures vivified by imagination and "the carrier of a message".
Newly discovered and as important as Primitive Surrealism: 1.The so-called New Art , recently exhibited at the Noth Bellmore Public Library, this summer as well as at the Levittown Public Library.2. Spontaneism, of which can be read the definition :
Press Release
What is Spontaneism? by Michel Doret Ph D
During the past two years, our efforts were aimed mainly to the promotion of Primitive Surrealism of Total Art, New Art and the production of documentary videos. We were about to pursue these topics in more depth this coming year.
It has become impossible to shut our eyes to a new artistic development, a direct offshoot of the above-mentioned activities . We feel irresistibly compelled not barely to mention the so-called Spontaneism but to call attention on this new discovery.
Although many don’t grow up and remain their entire life as they were at a certain point of their development , others feel at a certain point of their existence an urge to ascertain the reality of their existence as well as their potentialities.
This is true for human beings in all walks of life but artists seem to feel this need more strongly than others. In their early youth many people were in primary and secondary school being " socialized" by the system and trained to behave according to a classical pattern . They were accustomed to take for granted certain ways of perceiving reality , often obliged to suppress their inner feelings to side with the stereotypes of conventional education.
Once out of school, they were too busy with their thoughts and immediate goals to even question their former apprenticeship of life, until a day when they started looking around , asking questions about themselves , their environment and a certain philosophy of life which could guide them to their deeper satisfaction and the family tradition, religious beliefs and personal possibilities.
All along they had been applying to their daily behavior criteria that had been acquired in parental and school guidelines. Once they reached adulthood, they came to question tradition and to create new patterns to solve their daily problems and discover a satisfactory equilibrium . At this stage of their development, they became free and responsible for their own thoughts and acts.
Through that evolution they reached a point were they were no longer applying blindly the teachings of their elders and once they felt comfortable.
April 2003 Update: I started a few years ago to promote Primitive Surrealism of Total Art. Simultaneously, I had been experimenting with the new facilities and various programs offered by computers. I entitled that new style The New Art. I also discovered my own personal style: Spontaneism. All those theoretical approaches are illustrated by three New York important collections:1. Primitive Surrealism 2. The New Art 2002 3. Spontaneism.
I intend to continue as much as I can the promotion of those three styles and of my three collections, while at the same time pursuing current architectural and civil engineering activities rendered possible by new computer programs.
Michel's Video Studio has realized to this date a total of over 150 video films in three series: 1. The Religious Series 2. The New York
Series 3. The Art Series, that last one for the promotion of the Artist's art work and history.
Michel's Video Studio works for the development of Art and Film, focusing at present on documentaries, narrative and experimental realizations.
