Artist Statement for Jennifer Burnau

I call my paintings visions.

I paint not in order to represent things or ideas, but to induce states of mind and to provoke thoughts and emotions. All begin as abstract pieces introducing basic elements such as color, shape, direction and motion. Some proceed towards shapes which may evoke the things of nature; such as rocks. clouds, water or animals and the things of culture; such as buildings or writing. I attempt to present such juxtapositions as order vs. chaos, safety vs. danger and roughness vs. refinement.

My finished products are works on paper using watercolor and mixed media. I often begin with masking fluid and continue with watercolor and gouache on cold press watercolor paper. I also sometimes use metalic ink, various types of pencils and acrylics. I slowly layer the colors and shapes until I find the combinations satisfactory. I enjoy seeing the paintings gradually emerge.I approach painting with a sense of mystery and anticipation and with the intention of containing a wide range of expressions from the grandiose to the whimsical; from the sacred to the humorous. Others are welcome to interpret my paintings as they see them. I think there will be something there for everyone who will take them seriously but not too seriously to have fun with the experience.
