I was born in 1963 in the city of Danang, Vietnam. 1977 I escape from Vietnam; 2 years right after the Communist took over South Vietnam. I came to United State as a Vietnamese refugee, the program sponsored by the United Nation. 1979 I settled in Philadelphia, where I studied at The Pennsylvania University of the art.
After experimenting with many different media, such as Painting, printmaking and drawing, I specialized in painting and drawing graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1986. Ever since I started painting & drawing, art has become an indispensable part of my life. Each time I pick up a drawing tool I initiate a dialogue with my inner self. Through this process I always come back enriched as a more complete individual.
The inspiration for me is when my first trip I returned to the war torned country I left behide 22 years ago. I am inspired the vastness of the rice paddy fields, its strong contrast of heaven and earth, the ancient architectures and the richness culture of its people. I love to observe its temples, tombs & ancient palaces which are getting eroded by the passage of time. My interest in art and ancient architecture takes me to an adventure of the different cultures to see there diverse and the richness of its art forms. All these imageries impressions have affected me profoundly to the outcome of my works.
My personal choice of the medium that enable me to express these primitive beauties effectively is none other then the charcoal drawing. Mainly because of its strong black high contrast great for creating mood atmosphere. The charcoal sticks that can be used to create firmly rendered lines of the utmost precision, yet it is also friable enough to produce large-scale drawings of great tonal breadth and range, ability to render delicate transitions in tone in a smooth and seamless unity. These series of large scale drawings are my spiritual journey to seek for a permanent outer physical form to extent of my inner world when my time comes in this impermanent existent.
