Artist Statement:
My work deals with issues of female identity in the context of contemporary life and art history. It engages feminism, consumerism, and mental health. In my work I seek to subtly subvert the Western male oil painting tradition, while revealing my own insights and biases.
Female identity, sexuality, body image, depression, and isolation interest me. Particularly, I’m concerned with how those can be conveyed through figurative oil painting and drawing. Seeking a feminist dialogue with art history, I prefer subtlety and quality over shock and awe.
My art plays with subtleties of expression, mood, light and psychological composition. Limited palette oils and mixed media allow me to convey the moods with nuance, and the palette reflects the underlying darkness of the work.
Identity is the core idea behind much of my work. I question, examine, rage, and sit with the identity of myself and other women.
