Artist Statement:
Kathleen Colussy’s series contends with the dueling realities of the slick gloss travel brochures and the gritty real life of the indigenous people living and working in a given country.
Colussy’ work relates to the complexity of reconciling and integrating the truth behind these two conflicting realities in her art.
Kathleen’s work is a series of handmade books entitled: Treasures our of darkness, hidden in plain sight.
Each handmade book is based on a given country or culture, that has been constructed in a variety of mixed media including and not limited to; photography, ceramics, surface embellishment, reclaimed materials and the use of digital printing and dye sublimation.
The books are filled with multi-layered and non linear images that reveal the disconnection of the dueling realities that are confronted. Several issues that addressed are; human trafficking, the homeless, issues of rape, indentured servants, AIDS, forced sterilization and abortions, and child prostitution. The difficult subject matter is handled in a reverential and non-confrontational manner.
The elegant sophistication of how each of the books have been constructed, beckons the viewer to a more and intimate glimpse into the mind and heart of the artist. The engaging visual story ...
