Ann Street Bailey
Oil Painter
Burlington Vermont
As an outdoor painter I am thrilled to be able to spend my time combining my love of nature with my love of art. Early in my career I studied art as part of my formal training in interior design. Since that time I have continued my studies through classes and workshops with several Vermont artists, and other renowned national artists. Primarily, however, I still consider myself to be a self-taught painter. Formerly a business person and an educator, in 2002 I became determined to commit my time to the arts and to creating my own artistic interpretations of the places I love most.
As an interior designer I gained extensive experience working with color and color relationships. My interest in color includes its effect upon emotion and the human psyche. However, I believe that color is certainly an important painting aspect, but a successful painting involves problem solving other than creating a color plan. For me outdoor painting and direct observation allow the opportunity to analyze color elements. When painting on location,I often complete paintings alla prima (in one sitting). Or I may complete 95 percent on location, going to my studio for the final touch. Most often I use a wet on wet approach often with thick paint. I prefer to use walnut oil as a medium and find that painting on gessoed wood panels allows paint to try quickly, which is an advantage when traveling.
My formost objective is not to convey detail but to convey mood, feel and essence of a moment and place. Therefore, my style may differ from day to day and place to place. I move from alla prima rural landscapes, to simple minimalist paintings, to the more abstract, especially in painting botanicals. Or I may use expressionism. I find that a single style may not convey what is desired.
I credit my formalized instruction, relationships with many fine artists, and my work as an interior designer as integral parts of my artistic development. I continue to study painting techniques, composition, and art history. I annually attend artist workshops and continue to read and research the subject matter. But I still believe that there is nothing more important to growth as an artist than daily hands on painting. Having studied at the Irish School of Landscape Painting, I return annually to Ireland to paint as this is a land that offers incomparable atmospheric studies. When not in Ireland I may be found in the Red Rock Country of Arizona. Many of these paintings are of vortexes around the Sedona area and are part of my private collection. I also paint in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains near where I was raised. Most frequently, however, you will find me painting in the Green Mountains of Vermont. A Vermonter for nearly 15 years, my favorite scenes are close to my own home on Lake Champlain and that, of course, continues to be my favorite place to paint.
I exhibit frequently at art shows in Vermont and the surrounding area and other sites in Northern Vermont. I am fortunate that many of my paintings, including commissions, are now hanging in private, personal collections in many countries.
