Artist Statement for Mori Mccrae
Mori McCrae is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, in Toronto, Canada where she majored in drawing and painting. Over the last 25 years, one area of continual interest to her has been portrait painting, but more recently she has explored drawing on transparent and or flexible surfaces such as glass and duralar. Her current work explores the acts of living and loving in a temporal world. The natural world has a temporal quality that becomes compelling subject matter when set against the act of living and loving within it's boundaries. In her recent work she seeks to explore that relationship by contrasting iconic images with the somewhat flimsy materials that she uses to draw and construct them. For instance the Mona Lisa considered by many an icon of High Rennaissance portrait painting is treated as an obvious copy, a semi transparent drawing on a feather weight, collapsible surface. This treatment of the Mona has led to other kite-like drawings. This is not intended as satire though, as her interest in straight forward portrait painting is another means to explore the the same theme.
