I became captured by mosaics
in the late 1980s while
exploring the remains of
beautifully patterned 4th
century Roman floors in
southwestern France.
Returning to Miami, I began
exploring and experimenting,
creating a personal course of
study. After a couple of
years, I was fortuitously
rewarded with a large
commission for a park in
suburban Washington, D.C.
(twenty-eight portraits,
spiraling around a column),
which engaged me for most of a
year and convinced me that
mosaic work would be my
career. I studied art in
college, but had done various
things to survive since then.
Currently I work primarily on
commissioned projects; I enjoy
the research and problem
solving process of the design
phase, which also gets me out
of the studio and into
dialogue with clients and
colleagues. My familiarity
with the tradition of mosaics,
and with the practical
considerations, permit me to
facilitate the successful
evolution of an inspiration
into tangible reality. Most of
my projects involve
representational subjects, and
my clients most often present
themes, rather than specific
imagery to “translate” into
mosaics.
The execution phase is
generally a solitary one, but
I don't mind the "hermit-like"
