Artist Statement for Moti Sagron

Born in Tunis in 1954, Moti Sagron immigrated to Israel at the age of 14. After his army service, Mr. Sagron studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem under leading Israeli artists, such as painters Uri Lipschitz, Yoram Meroz, Moshe Agmon, Ivan Schweibel, Amos Kenan, and sculptor Ezra Orion.

Mr. Sagron has taught art at community colleges, high schools, immigrant programs, hospices, and has directed community centers in the Negev. His years of community work give strength and depth to Mr. Sagron's paintings. On many of his canvasses we see the effects of global political cynicism, poverty, sub-standard education, and the continuing Israeli-Arab conflict. Mr. Sagron makes the obvious connections politics and the life of the average citizen. He works from the bottom up – in the backwater towns of the desert and on the streets of the struggling center of the Negev, Be'er Sheva. His canvasses are layered, and profoundly informed about social issues.
