Artist Statement for Jennifer Bass

I am inspired by the world around me, as I interact with it. People, art, music, film and my surroundings all create impressions that stimulate my imagination, and lead to my own, original piece of artwork. My goal is to create in the viewer the same experiences I had while creating the piece.

Taking these ideas and working through them is an exhilarating process. Each piece is carefully planned, practiced, and executed. I begin by making small sketches, working out my future piece until I am satisfied with my vision for it. Then comes the long, hard, and ultimately rewarding process of creating the final piece, and seeing how the image develops as I take it from my head to my canvas. I generally work in acrylics, charcoal, and ink. My work is mainly representational, though not always realistic. Occasionally I use text and pure design elements.

To me, a piece of art should be able to stand alone, apart from whatever symbolism or background story that may accompany it. To this end, I want my work to display the highest skill. The object of this, combined with the stylistic choices I make, is to create an image that immediately reaches the viewer: the type of image that draws the viewer into the work and impresses the image, and emotion it occasioned, into memory.
