Artist Statement for Nancy White Cassidy

About my artwork and technique:

My work tends to be primarily illustrative in nature. I believe in allowing a picture to tell a story, which is why I am drawn to illustration and complex still life paintings. Because I like to develop my artwork as quickly as possible, I often use a dry medium, such as soft pastel, to create my painting. When I want to be retrospective, I work in oils. Due to the protracted drying time (especially in humid weather), I am able to take my time and experiment with different styles and moods.

I use several methods to achieve my desired effect, depending on the subject matter and intention. For my illustrations, I begin with a rough drawing , which I then refine, scan into my computer and blow up to the desired size, and transfer it onto my final substrate. My still life paintings and landscapes are painted directly onto my substrate without preliminary drawings. The still life paintings are worked from setups while the landscapes may be from my memory or on location.

My illustrations are generally geared towards children. I am especially fond of drawing animals, anthropomorphic and otherwise, for I feel an affinity towards them still, as I had as a child.

With my pastel paintings, I prefer a very tight, detailed composition rather than a loose painting. Viewers sometime confuse my pastels for oil paintings, due to this degree of detail. I usually wash in the backgrounds and primary objects with pastel and turpentine, which gives me a solid ground on which to work up my subject matter.

I prefer oils for landscapes. My landscapes are generally moody and oils are the best vehicle to emulate this mood. They are often painted from memories of early mornings in the Great North Maine Woods. Of mists and trees with lichen and boggy streams attractive to moose and bear. Early morning drives through a foggy Litchfield County also provide pleasant memories upon which I draw in my paintings.
