Artist Statement:
ABOUT THE MICHAEL LISA PAINTING:
In 1994,the Mystery of Michael Jackson inspired me to paint him as the Mona Lisa.
The white tabs on the robe place this painting in the "PAPER DOLL" Series. This series represents the various roles individuals play.
The individuals who I have chosen to portray in this series are
public figures who have not only created the roles they play,
but often have additional roles thrust upon them by public opinion.
ABOUT THE NEO-MYTHOLOGY SERIES:
Mythological belief systems - their characters and stories - have always been a significant part of world history.
In the Neo-Mythology Series, I choose characters and stories from all kinds of mythologies: Greco-Roman, Norse, Christian, Judaic, Hindu etc. and “contemporize” them with 20th/ 21st Century ‘props’ to paint narratives which reflect current situations / attitudes in our world. These situations / attitudes: War, Ignorance, Indifference, Self-centeredness, Fear, Fragility, Greed and such have been a part of the human condition throughout the history of the world.
If history repeats itself - so do mythologies.
The Neo-Mythology Series is one of several ongoing series that I’ve been working on throughout the years.
