Artist Statement for Nancy Lee Stewart Ph. D.

Experimentation with materials, subject ideas, and design helps to keep my mind engaged after five decades of drawing and painting. At the age of twelve, I began classical lessons in painting and continued learning through college and recent seminars. The study of modern dance choreography and movement increased my awareness of innovative design Observations of people intensified when I traveled to and lived in other countries. I studied the varied developmental learning theories, and evaluated them while watching my growing sons. A career in high school and college teaching emphasized creative development. All of these varied involvements with ideas eventually led to an interdisciplinary Ph. D. in Fine Arts degree, and influenced my painting, writing, teaching, and consulting, as well as my life. My work today continues to explore new ideas, but the design presentation always depends on abstract underpinnings.
