Artist Statement for Nathan Turner

We only experience true fulfillment in life when we invest our lives in a purpose that is beyond ourselves. Art for art’s sake has little appeal to me. As an artist I see myself primarily as a communicator. My desire to communicate is what fuels my desire to create art. I am as passionate about what I am communicating as I am about the physical process of creating an image.

The content of my work focuses on the human figure and the human condition, and it is often autobiographical in nature. I use my own experience as a vehicle through which I can respond to what I see taking place in the society around me. I am particularly interested in the morals, values, and inner belief-systems that cause people to think and act the way they do. Art interests me a great deal, but truth, and communicating truth, interests me far more.
