Artist Statement for Jeff Anderson

I grew up in the sticks and to this day I pay attention to the non man-made environment to ground myself somewhat and try to remember what’s real. Trees, clouds, the river, birds, rocks and dirt make me feel at home. But I also love the play of electronically generated work, musically and visually, and I appreciate the beautifying influence of good graffiti on the urban environment. The best work, it seems to me, points back to where it all comes from.

One has given birth to the other. Its like Mother Mary with a squirming Little Baby Jesus who wants to run around. The environment holds her kids and all their little tech toys and stuff. I know this image is kinda insulting to the Big Important digital hallucination balloon we’re all busy blowin up but I’m sorry- we still eat food and take a crap, ya know. We’re IN the world, not floating somewhere ON it. Remember?

The feel of the line in graffiti particularly reminds me of this connection. The relaxed tension is the same as that in the curve of a river, the bounce of a branch or the flow in a killer breaks mix. Its this connection that I try to communicate in my work. I
hope be able to effectively do that someday before I’m worm food. Anyway, thanks for
reading.
