Artist Statement for Nicholas Stedman

Curriculum vitae
Nicholas Stedman was born in Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. After graduating from the University of Cambridge and obtaining a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Paris, he opted to become an artist in 1985.
The human body has always been at the centre of his research. Enigmatic or emblematic, static or moving figures haunt his paintings
Inspired by the work of American Choreographers such as Merce Cunningham or Lucinda Childs, he has developed a pictorial system that attempts to attenuate all emotional, psychological or narrative considerations. This has led to an irreversible breakdown in the picture space.
The human figure is now transcribed into materials in a game of declinations, each fragment gaining relief from the others so that the whole work is sufficient in itself. The recomposed universe of Nicholas Stedman now offers itself to the public like a story to be retold though its sense and order are forever obscure.
