Artist Statement for Nichole Dement

THE IMAGE
My images are an exploration of human nature. I juxtapose photographs of people taken in a studio with images captured in my environment through a color darkroom process or through layers of mixed media and encaustic. This layering of images creates a new composition that enhances the idea that we are not only shaped by our environment, but also uniquely meshed within it.

THE PROCESS
Like my image style, my process is experiential. While creating the images, I employ various creative methods to make each image unique, i.e. painting, scratching, puncturing and/or layering.
