Artist Statement for Mario Armitano

Jean Cocteau said that, an artist can talk about his work, like plants can talk about horticulture...
Well, plants can't talk! And artists must learn to talk intelligently about their work, and try to define his or her role in the contemporary world of Art.
My Artist life started at L'ecole Hoteliere de Toulon, France,(culinary institute of Toulon). Moving to Montreal, then Vancouver, this cooking career ended with a restaurant called "Le Souffle". A french butcher shop, in the, then newly open, Granville Island Market, and a French Bakery, "La Baguette et L'echalote" in which the learning experience was unbelievable, making breads, pastries, and prepared meals to take home.
I retired from the Bakery in 2000, to explore my life long passion for sculpture. After a few years of learning experiences, I finaly found the subject matter that I am really passionate about: the figure.
Henry Moore said " the development as a sculptor is an attempt to understand and realize more completely what form and shape are about, and to react to form in life, in the human figure.
This is something that can't be learn in a day, for sculpture is a never-ending discovery."
For me there is no destination, it's a journey...The relentless search to free the mind to perceive reality. The human figure, the understanding of what is beneath the surface. To be able to release the life force which give vitality and strengh to the work.
My struggle, with a mixture of emotional and imaginative inspiration, is the result of my work. My aim is to please the senses, my goal is to show the spiritual vitality in each pieces. And the ultimate would be to find and create my own individual style.
For me the human figure is my passion, and it would take me many life times for this subject to be exhausted!
There is so much to do, and so little time...
