Artist Statement for Yoko Nogami

I have always been interested in figurative works. Most of my works are imaginary, but the subject matter and people depicted, for the most part, are real to me. I believe that my paintings do not require explanation. I would like the viewer to come up with their own interpretations and perhaps create a story of their own. I am fascinated in recreating a story, between two entities. People vs people, human vs nature, person vs self. These sorts of dynamics create each and every person`s lives distinct and the stories that result out of it inspire me. Figures dominate my work because my interpretations of these relationships filters most strongly through people. I am interested in details of how a look, a hand placemnt, the parting of lips or the curve of a back possess the ability to communicate to a viewer - the mood of the situation, the story that is happening and the emotions that go with it. I am happy when I can tell a story through such subtle nuances of body language in the figures I create.
