Artist Statement for Norm Chodirker

I graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver,Canada in 1984.I majored in Sculpture, but since 1999, I have been focusing on Painting and Collage. My work is primarily Abstract Expressionism(i.e. I deal with the relationships of form, color, texture, as formal elements rather than something in specific reality). I rely mostly on what my subconscious mind tells me . Intuitively, I allow my hands to play and discover;my mind follows my hands rather than vice versa. I have complete trust in the accidental, the unexpected. The conversation between the accidental and the intentional, creates the art. Overlaying the intuition, comes my conscious desire to express a subtle connection between life forms. The works are more highly textured and three-dimensional than they appear here. I use high-quality Acrylic paint and mostly high quality(100% rag) paper or canvas. If I use Collage, I will use anything that fits the composition. I hope you enjoy my work . o
