Artist Statement:
Called the "Norman Rockwell
of Sports Artists", some of
Neal’s original works of art
hang in the homes of Frank
Sinatra, Red Sox Hall of Famer
Ted Williams, and legendary
golfer Jack Nicklaus. A former
baseball player, and current
college pitching coach, Neal’s
love and knowledge of sports
personifies his subjects with
his unique ability to capture
the realism in his
illustrations.
The Children' s Miracle
Network commissioned Neal to
create a multi-action portrait
of longtime Duke Basketball
Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Past
artists commissioned by the
Children’s Miracle Network
have included the world
renowned Leroy Nieman. The
sale of Neal' s Coach K
portrait will help fund a new
wing for the Duke Children's
Hospital.
Over the past decade, Neal
completed a series of drawings
being used in the Golden State
Warriors Hall of Fame, and
from 1992-1995, Neal was
commissioned by the Basketball
Hall of Fame to illustrate
their annual induction program
cover, as well as illustrate
the “Curt Gowdy Award,
presented annually to a print
and electronic media award
recipient. He has illustrated
over 700 programs and media
guides covers for a variety of
NCAA schools including
Michigan State, Virginia,
UMass, UCLA...

Why Did You Become An Artist It was a natural transition from my baseball carreer to use my talents that I'd been doing since age 5.
 
Your Personal Biography Called the "Norman Rockwell of Sports Artists", some of Neal’s original works of art hang in the homes of Frank Sinatra, Red Sox Hall of Famer Ted Williams, and legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. A former baseball player, and current college pitching coach, Neal’s love and knowledge of sports personifies his subjects with his unique ability to capture the realism in his illustrations.

He has created limited edition commemoratives for Michigan State, ECAC, Yale University, Holy Cross College, and Colgate University. Neal currently illustrates athletic hall of fames for NCAA schools nationwide.
Neal has created limited edition lithographs for professional athletes Doug Flutie, soccer legend Walter Zenga, former New England Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe, WNBA star Rebecca Lobo, former Boston Red Sox outfielder Dwight Evans, hockey great Ray Bourque and former Brooklyn Dodger pitcher Don Newcombe. His background in caricatures allows him to recreate the personality of his subjects, and his use of felt markers pops colors off the board. This unique medium allows Neal to deliver movement and texture that makes his art so special.
Known in the corporate world as an entertainer with a quick wit and a sleight of hand, Neal has entertained functions for many corporations including Citizens Bank, Digital Equipment, NEC, Iron Mountain Incorporated, Allmerica Financial, Telespectrum Worldwide, Reebok, Starter, and ESPN. Neal Portnoy Studio Inc. is fast becoming a unique hot commodity in the world of sports artists.
