| Why Did You Become An Artist |
As an undergraduate student at
Berkeley from 1968 to 1972, I was quite tempted to go off and live in an artist community somewhere along the coast after finishing my degree, but instead found myself married with a son and spent twenty years working as a professional psychologist. All this time I kept sketch books and as I approached retirement, I converted our guest house into a studio and have been painting and doing photography ever since. I believe that one paints because one must paint, one is compelled to paint, or that has been my experience in why I pursue art. |

| Your Personal Biography |
I was born in January of 1950 in one of the worst snowstorms in the history of Minnesota. As an undergraduate at UC Berkeley from 1968 to 1972, my plan was to go live in an artist community along the coast after graduation and paint and write and do photography. But as often happens, these plans fell by the wayside. After getting my bachelor’s degree, I spent the next five years doing odd jobs and traveling around the world. I spent two years in the Peace Corps in Thailand, and on my way home, I traveled through Europe. Upon returning to the states, I entered graduate school, completed my doctoral degree in psychology, got married and my wife and I had a son. For the next twenty years of my professional life as a psychologist I worked in university counseling centers and the last ten years I worked as a forensic psychologist for the Florida Department of Corrections at prison near Tallahassee, Florida.
I retired from the Department of Corrections in early 2004 and converted our guesthouse into a studio where I do my painting, writing, and photography. Thus, I took up my brushes seriously only four years ago and only in the past year have I started submitting my works for exhibition. My paintings are influenced by the spiritual traditions of both the East and the West. I have spent most of my adult life studying these spiritual tradition and so many of my paintings have spiritual themes and often include images of monks, angels and other religious themes.
I am still in the process of experimenting with paint and enjoying the freedom of painting what I like. |
