Artist Statement:
Olaf Stevens (Tilburg, NL
1954) is well-known for his
unusual style. In glass and
porcelain alike, his
variations of form and
ornamentation are always
guaranteed to
surprise,combining motifs of
a long tradition with
absolute innovations. Stevens
achieves his singular effects
by a labor-intensive Swedish
technique called "Graal". A
comparable technique is not to
be found even at the
history-endowed glass
workshops of Murano, Italy.
The heavy , solid glass and
the contrast between
archetypical form and
capricious decoration lend the
objects an appearance all
their own.
Numerous international
exhibitions and publications
pay tribute to his work in the
fine Arts, including museum
exhibitions in Madrid, Linz,
Helsinki, New York, Boston and
Baltimore. Clients for whom
Olaf Stevens designs in the
glass and porcelain industry
include Rosenthal, former
Hutschenreuther, Royal
Leerdam, Ritzenhoff Cristal AG
and Hoya Cristal company in
Japan....
