Artist Statement for Omo Otun

African Cultural Paintings by Omo Otun

Rooted in Culture

My art is rooted in the culture of the African peoples, places, culture and indeed their environment! It is based on a deep understanding of the myths, folklores, festivals, music and beliefs of the people. But it finds extension into nature and urban landscapes. Prominent in work are also masquerades, timeless crafts, motifs and traditional decorative patterns.

Color form remains the main thrust of my art as I strive to stretch colors to a limitless end. I combine my personal experience with direct observation of nature and man.

I draw my entire illustration from culture, my people and my environment!
