Artist Statement:
I’ve had an interest in blacksmithing and mixed media sculptural work for many years, the last couple of which have seen development of figurative sculpture shown here.
Forged sculptures are bought to shape by hand using traditional blacksmithing techniques. Finishes are generally heat colored with an open flame, which produces a subtle array of oxide colors unique to each. Other pieces are treated with various patina techniques. All are treated with a clear protective lacquer.
The subject matter ranges from collages of found objects, to figures in active or dramatic poses. Some figures reflect subjects of true or invented mythology. Most are of suitable size for home display.
It’s often said that sculptors of stone nurture the emerging forms from the material. I find something similar happens during the forging process. Regardless of the process, work that emerges with a feeling of inherent rightness or personality survives recycling.
Forging is a physical, intense, immediate and direct method of working metal. Occasionally the sketched idea emerges as drawn, at other times the process can, and often does, take on a life of its' own after the first heat. When spontaneous changes of the direction occur, more often than not ...
