Artist Statement for Pete Pierce

|
The goal of my current work is to capture the greatness and awe of those places where the land is halted by our vast pacific ocean. From the power of large open ocean swells pounding the shore to the peaceful peel of a wave into a secluded, sheltered cove, each location I work from directly touches one's soul with feelings beyond simple description. My task is more than accurately duplicating what the eye sees. The challenge of my work is to express an appreciation for a site's qualities on canvas.
The best method for doing this I feel is to experience each location more than just setting up an easel for an afternoon. To take inventory of what composes a loved place in a few hours is unrealistic. Before I can take a piece back to my studio to work and finish, I need to know the landscape like my own backyard. That way when painting I will reach a point where I can step back and realize, 'yes, that is what it feels like to be there.'
